The Giver is about a boy named Jonas who lives in a
futuristic community. In this community, all people give up pain and pleasure
to live a happy but uneventful life.
When children are twelve, the Chief Elder appoints them to a certain
job. When Jonas turns twelve, he is selected
to be the new Receiver of Memories, a job in which he receives
memories of both pain and pleasure from a mysterious man know only as The
Giver.
At the same time, his family takes care of a newchild (baby) named Gabriel. Gabriel would have been released from the community if Jonas' father hadn’t intervened. Jonas takes a liking to little Gabe and when he cries a night, Jonas gives Gabe a memory of calming happiness.
Sometime later a birthmother gives birth to identical twins. The community doesn’t allow two of the same people, so the one who weighs less must be released. Jonas asks the Giver if he can see the release, because he has never has seen a release before. Jonas is shocked at what happens.
